Columbine

More Information

Columbines come in many colors!

Columbine is also known as Granny’s bonnet and known for its distinctive, bell-shaped, spurred flowers. Some are even bi-colored and have double blooms, a real classic for any garden! These perennials can have red, yellow, white, blue, pink or light and deep purple blossoms. They are airy plants with attractive lace like foliage, reaching 2-3 feet in height. Columbine plants bloom in late spring to early summer and self-seed readily.

Columbine grows best in full sun and well-drained, fertile soil. For most climates, columbine grows best in partial shade. Columbine nectar and pollen benefit hungry birds and insects, such as hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.  Most Columbine are hardy from zones 3 – 9 and some native varieties will also thrive from zones 1 – 11

I have several varieties of columbine growing  here and there in my yard. I am always drawn to the Columbine, they remind me of an old country garden! I am looking forward to trying a few new varieties this year!
