Clematis

More Information

There are hundreds of species of Clematis and thousands of varieties, clematis makes a great impact in any garden coming in many colors, shapes and sizes! With all the choices in varieties there is a clematis to suite any hardiness zone! I enjoy 8 different clematis vines in my yard, each unique to their own; bringing a different bloom, texture and foliage at staggered times throughout the spring and summer.

Clematis vines have three main requirements to thrive – sunlight on their stems and leaves; cool and moist but not wet roots; and support for climbing. Plant the vine where it will get at least six hours of daylight. Filtered shade during the hottest part of the day will help keep dark-colored blooms from fading. For a cool root zone, use mulch or organic compost, or plant low-growing shrubs or perennials that will shade the base of the vine.

Clematis are usually classed as Type A, B or C (aka Group 1, 2 or 3), each with different pruning requirements, generally this information will be included on the nursery tag from which you purchase your clematis.

I enjoy several varieties throughout early Spring to Summer in my yard!
