Toad Lily
More Information
Low Maintenance and absolutely stunning the Toad Lily (Tricyrtis) are native to moist woodlands and high elevations from Eastern Asia to the Philippines.
The name of this orchid looking flower is very misleading, there is nothing Toad like about this beautiful flower.
Toad lilies are easy to grow. What makes them a special perennial is not only the bright, unique flowers, but also their ability to bloom in shade from late summer to early fall. Not too many plants provide bright color in the shade this late in the season. I find they do well in a sunny spot protected from the blazing sun, with another plant close by to keep the foliage cool.
The toad lily grows 24 – 36″ tall in zones 4 through 10, they will almost double each season, but never becoming invasive. Toad Lilies should be planted where they can easily be seen – show off theses beauties! Toad Lilies were near unheard of in Home Gardens in North America until the last few decades… now spotted in gardens all over, these lilies are so similar to an outdoor orchid, but much easier to care for!
Start Toad lilies from seed or division in Spring. There are several varieties available – this beauty is a must have!
