Spiders in the House?
More Information
Spiders hate peppermint and eucalyptus! Put some peppermint oil or eucalyptus (or both) in a squirt bottle with a little water and spray your garage, all door frames and windows.. even corners, closets walls – anywhere you may have a spider!
Another great and effective recipe to spray: Any citrus oil or fresh squeezed citrus with a few dashes of vinegar and water. There is no exact measurement needed for each of these recipes, just concoct what you have kicking around the house – of course the stronger the scent the most effective the remedy.
Old wives tale: Chestnuts or Horse Chestnuts in the corners of your home will also help repel spiders from coming in. You must drill or poke a small hole into the chestnut and place in all door ways, window sills and closet corners. Horse chestnuts are inedible, which may support the idea that they contain some chemicals noxious to spiders. Some have suggested you need to open the chestnut up or poke holes in it to take effect.
*My Grandmother, Mother and Myself all have done this.. Does it work? Well maybe?? I do see the odd spider, but would there be more without the chestnuts?
Get rid of spiders before they come inside. – Keep outdoor landscaping neatly trimmed and mow regularly to keep the number of spiders close to the home to a minimum. Get rid of spiders’ habitats by raking leaves and grass clippings away from the house, especially from basement windows and door jambs. Do not keep composting bins close to your home whenever possible. Create a boundary around your home with cedar mulch or sand to provide an irritant to deter spiders from wanting to set up house. Check all door seals and window seals and caulk whenever necessary. If you allow houseplants to sun during the day, wash them off before bringing them back inside to get rid of spiders hitching a ride back into the home. (via K. Mariano)
