Lemon Grass

More Information

Lemongrass is an aromatic tropical grass from India, well-known for its flavoring ingredients in Indian and Thai cooking.

In India, the grass is used in traditional medicine to help reduce fevers and kill infections, and also as a natural insect repellent, used in soaps and beauty products. The leaves are chopped just above ground level and, as with all grasses, new shoots are then produced very quickly.

You will have to live in at least zone 8/9 if you want to grow lemongrass outdoors, however if you live in a cooler climate you can grow lemon grass in large pots and keep indoors or in a green house during winter months. Each plant can grow to between 3 and 6 feet high. You may even be able to start a new lemongrass plant from fresh organic stalks you purchase at the regular grocery store. As long as they are still firm and green, you should be able to get them to root. Snip off an inch or two from the end of the leaves, and put the base end in a glass of water. Leave somewhere sunny, and you should start to see roots sprouting from the bottom of the stalk in about a week or two. Once your stalk has roots at least an inch long, you can either plant it in a container for indoor growing or take it right out into the garden.
