Hens & Chicks

More Information

Did you know Hens & Chicks are also known as Houseleek…..

There are many myths and tales dating back 2000 years about Houseleeks growing on the tile roofs of houses to protect from lightening and fire, and settlers packing these for protection upon their voyage to the New World.  Originally Houseleeks are from the mountain areas of Central and Southern Europe, now grown all over the world.

There are over 500 different varieties, however the regular old Houseleek (shown in picture) is the only one known for any medicinal properties.  The leaves can be used as an astringent when broken in half to be applied to burns, insect bites and stinging nettle. Many hikers pack a Hen & Chick along in their back pack, it can also be helped to soften corns on the feet – bind a leaf sliced open to the skin for a few hours, repeat as needed.

I have several different Hens & Chicks growing all over my yard! Since they are so easy to grow and require little attention they the make perfect plants to grow in driftwood, old shoes, rock gardens and more! Great for containers, poor well drained soil will do, water during dry spells.

Perennials growing hardy to Zones 4 – 10 in some conditions place in covered areas during winter.
